How to use the ALICE Event Display

In order to use the ALICE event display, you should first check out the branch feature-eve from aliroot. Using Dario's script (https://dberzano.github.io/alice/install-aliroot/), you can install this by adding following line to you alice-env.conf:
AliTuple[2]='root=v5-34-32 geant3=v2-0 aliroot=feature-eve'
(adjust the number after AliTuple; the root version should be at least 5-34-32; in principle the event display also works with a normal aliroot instalation, but the latest features and bugfixes will be first committed to feature-eve)

You will find the macros to run the event display in

$ALICE_ROOT/EVE/macros

You have to execute them, not with aliroot, but with alieve. You can visualize local ESD or AOD files, and files from GRID.

To display a GRID file, run e.g.:

alieve $ALICE_ROOT/EVE/macros/visscan_raw.C'("/alice/data/2010/LHC10d/000122372/pass4/10000122372023.100")'

To display a local file, run

alieve $ALICE_ROOT/EVE/macros/visscan_local.C'("path_to_file")'

These macros in turn call the macro

$ALICE_ROOT/EVE/macros/visscan_init.C

You can modify it, to e.g. change if tracks should be in different colors based on PID or on quality, change the appearance of the detectors, and lots of other stuff.

Further details can be found in http://aliweb.cern.ch/Offline/Activities/Visualisation/index.html. If you have problems or questions, you can also contact the developer of the event display Jeremi Niedziela (jeremi.niedziela@cern.ch).
